Introduction to a Film Major

Well to start off, I am Andrew Albright.  I am a senior here at OU and am majoring in Film and Media.  Now when I say that most people think that all we do is watch films.  While this is mostly true we also look at the technical aspects of films such as costuming, blocking, lighting, and so on.  I have been in love with movies ever since I was very young.  I recently achieved my New Year’s resolution that I made for myself which was to have over 1,000 movies on iTunes and I was able to achieve that before the year ended.  I will graduate either this summer or next fall.   A fun fact is that I work as a Video manager for the OU football team and have been doing so for the past 4 years and I have enjoyed it immensely.

The class that I really enjoyed taking last semester was the Mythology and Folklore class that Laura teaches.  I really enjoyed working at my own pace and becoming a better writer.  My biggest accomplishment last semester was making the honor roll for sure.  I never thought that I would make any type of honor roll because I have always struggled with school and never thought I was any good at it, so I was really proud of myself.

My favorite types of movies would have to be horror for sure.  My girlfriend does not like them at all, but I cannot get enough of them.  On top of horror I also enjoy pretty much any movie that can keep my interest or has Ryan Reynolds.  When it comes to tv I love all action comedy shows as well as horror.  My top shows are Psych, Blue Mountain State, The Witcher, and Carnival Row.  When it comes to music I am a metal head at heart but can listen to just about anything.

I honestly cannot wait to graduate and be in the real world again.  Before coming back to school in 2016 I worked full time for an oil company, so I got to adult for a bit.  I did enjoy it a lot actually. MY goal, when I graduate, is to work in the NFL being a videographer, write scripts, or go back to work at PSAV which is an audio-visual company.

  1. Hi Andrew!
That is SO SO cool! I have never met a Film and Media major. I bet you are a pro at filming Tik Tok videos also haha. Just kidding! And I definitely agree with you about Laura's class! It helped me so much in expressing myself and improving my writing.

Did you say horror movies? I HATE them!! I espeially hate jump scares. However, I am in love with Ryan Reynolds ever since The Proposal!

BOOMER SOONER forever am I right?

Good luck and can't wait to get to know you better!

  2. Hi Andrew! I love going to all the OU football games, and my favorite part pre-game is definitely the hype video. Especially for the important games, it just makes the experience that much more intense. Y'all on the video team have done an amazing job for as long as I've been here. I hope you can go pro in your field, working in the NFL would be really cool. Boomer Sooner!

  3. Hi Andrew! That picture of you with the Big 12 Trophy is so cool! I love OU football even though I am not originally from Oklahoma. I am also amazed that you have over 1000 movies on iTunes. That is so many movies, I don't think I've even seen that many movies in my life. I also don't understand how you favorite genre is horror movies.

  4. It is so fun meeting people a second time around so that I can put the information in a real context this time: I had forgotten that you are an FVS major, Andrew! I am not a horror movie fan myself, but my dad really like horror movies, so I'll watch horror movies there with him. And I actually do like the ones that are kind of occult or suspense or something like that; I thought "Get Out" was one of the best movies ever, for example. And I love some of the classics like "Rosemary's Baby" or "The Omen." In the Indian epics, you'll be seeing lots of rakshasas (sometimes translated as demon or goblin; there's not really an English word that's equivalent)... and in some accounts, the rakshasas are horror-movie type creature, eating human flesh, drinking blood, etc. but then in other accounts, they are not so different from humans really. And the same way in the artwork; sometimes the rakshasas look pretty human... but sometimes, they look really weird, as in scary-weird. And hey, since none of us has actually seen a rakshasa, it's all a matter of imagination! :-)

  5. Hi Andrew, my best friend is also a film major!! She goes to school in Chicago, but from what she tells me and what you have written, it seems like a really cool major to have. My family is a huge movie family, like we go to the movies almost every weekend! Although I love movies, I will not see horror movies! I really like thriller, which to me isn't as scary as horror. I love watching sports, especially football so I think being a videographer in the NFL would be so awesome.

  6. Hi Andrew! Congrats on making honor roll last semester! That's no easy accomplishment and you should be really proud of that! I've never been much of a movie person other than action comedy movies. I definitely can't watch any horror movies, I get scared way too easily. Ryan Reynolds is one of my favorite actors, especially in the Deadpool movies, he portrays Deadpool perfectly. Also, the picture of you with the Big 12 trophy is so cool!

  7. Hey Andrew, nice to meet you. It's really neat that you work as a video manager and get to experience something related to your major. And you have good taste, Ryan Reynolds is a great actor. He did such a good job as Deadpool and also in 6 Underground and Detective Pikachu. Have you seen all those already? If not I recommend them. Oh, the Hitman's Bodyguard is also a really good one.

  8. Hi Andrew,

Ok, so Ryan Reynolds. Have you watched the show "Two Guys, a Girl, and a Pizza Place?" If you're not overly concerned with quality (Ha! I know production quality is literally your major) you can watch them on YouTube. The DVD collection is on Amazon. It's been on my Christmas Wishlist forever. It's the show that made me fall in love with Ryan Reynolds in the first place.

Out of your three goals, which one are you pushing toward the most?

    Thanks for sharing!

  9. Hi Andrew,
It is refreshing to see someone so passionate about film. Who doesn't love movies? It's great to see someone using their passion to while also so heavily involved with the OU football team. I know how much they use film to prep for games and learn from. I am a senior as well and only time will tell where it takes you. Good luck with your future endeavors!

  10. Hello Andrew, nice to meet you! Film and Media studies sound so cool, but also working for OU Football has to be a blast!! Horror movies are NOT my preferred genre, I am terrified of anything that jumps at the screen haha. I prefer rom-com or just comedy tbh! Also, I am so surprised that I haven't seen any of the TV shows you listed, I have to add them to my list! Good luck with your goal, I do not doubt that you would be amazing in that!

  11. Hi Andrew!

It’s so cool that you’re a film and media major. All my friends are science majors so I never get to hear about majors like yours. I would love to read more about your experience with the OU Football team. Once again, I don’t have any friends with your position so it’ll be refreshing to learn about it.

When it comes to horror movies, I am a huge coward. In the movie theatre, I’m the person to cover my eyes and ears and cuddle up to the person beside me. Ever since I was a kid, horror movies always freaked me out because I had a vivid imagination. When night time came, I could not sleep due to the scary thoughts in my head. You’re so cool that you can watch a horror film and be fine after.

Lastly, congratulations on making the honor roll! I know how difficult school can get so earning that honor is a huge win. Continue to push forward!

  12. Hey Andrew! Nice to meet you. I have never met anyone who is a film major. I am a biology pre-med major so I am constantly around STEM majors, so you're like a breath of fresh air! I have no idea what your classes are like as a film major, but I have always been into short films myself. Freshman year, I made my first ever short film and it's not that great but I was proud because I had always wanted to make one. I can see why you chose it as your major haha I hope you get to graduate and become an adult soon!

  13. Hello Andrew! Okay, I actually never assumed that all film majors did was watch movies all the time. I have a lot of respect for people in the industry because there is SO much that goes into film making. These projects take big brains, lots of time, and so many hands. It's a lot of detail that people don't think about, so props to you for wanting to go into that field! With online classes now though, I wonder how the rest of your semester is looking... I'm sure a lot of your classes are hands-on; nonetheless, I wish you the best of luck!

  14. Hi Andrew!
I actually am friends with another Andrew who is a film major and senior! I also love The Witcher. When I finished season 1 I just wanted to keep re-watching it. My boyfriend plays the game on Xbox so I found out about the show through the game. I also think being a video manager for the OU football team is awesome. You should make a bibliography about a day in the life as a video manager. I think that would be super cool to read about! Well done.

  15. Hi Andrew!
I also took mythology and folklore last semester, and I remember reading some of your stories there! I agree. This is a great class to develop one's writing skills on an individualized basis. Congratulations on making the honor roll! That is such a great accomplishment. I see that you are a senior, and I hope you are doing well with this virus. I know it must not be easy with graduating.

  16. Andrew,

So cool that you got to hold the big 12 trophy. I'm jealous lol. I haven't met very many film majors, i'm a science nerd. I really enjoy horror movies, so that's also really cool. If I was more confident in myself, I would have majored in something like film because its so cool. Congrats on making honor roll! I got my first B last semester so i'm no longer in there, but I know how hard it is so I have respect!

  17. Howdy Andrew,
Always happy to find another cinephile in class, what has made you go this route, do you think? What are your favorite movies from 2019 would you say - with horror being your genre of choice I'd guess The Lighthouse is up there for you, but I think that was more of a black comedy in truth. I'm stoked to hear you're doing well in school, best of luck closing down this semester.
